Fields Corner Community Development Corporation
History

Fields Corner Community Development Corporation (FCCDC) was formed by a coalition of neighborhood organizations already active in improving their respective neighborhoods: Clampoint Neighborhood Association, Dorchester Gardenlands Preserve and Development Corporation, Dorchester Neighbors Organizing Neighbors, Freeport Adams Development Corporation, and Meeting House Hill Improvement. Incorporated on April 11, 1980, its purpose was to plan and stimulate development in the Fields Corner Community to encourage further growth of the area as a residential community and to maintain a stable business community. FCCDC indicated in its Article of Organization that it would accomplish this mission by promoting business ventures and providing assistance to neighborhood groups which are involved in designing and planning activities within the Fields Corner target area.

FCCDC's first project was six (6) units of manufactured housing for moderate income homeowners. This project was the first new construction in the Dorchester Community in 30 years and was completed in 1983.

The Boston Housing Partnership worked with FCCDC and other community development corporations through their BHP-I "Housing" program to develop low/moderate rental housing. FCCDC's role was to develop 76 units, which were completed in 1986. Another 67 units of low-income rental housing were developed through the Boston Housing Partnership II program and are together called "the Granites". FCCDC now manages these units through their Arcadian Management Division.

Arcadian Property Management Division of FCCDC has completed its eighth year of operation. This community controlled management company has responsibility for all of the properties owned by the Fields Corner CDC-168 units of rental housing. We are most proud that this young company has received the highest rating possible in its evaluations from the Massachusetts Housing Finance Agency.

Arcadian Management is an excellent example of what a community can accomplish when given the tools. Initially funded with a grant from the Federal Office of Community Service-Department of Health and Human Services, the past ten years have seen it grow from a concept of the Fields Corner CDC membership into a contributing commercial venture in the area. It now employs 14 local residents full time and has a range of part time positions available from time to time.

The FCCDC continues to provide staff support and technical assistance to a host of emerging community groups.

The future includes development of home ownership opportunities on Robinson Street, creation of additional commercial space on Dorchester Avenue and other projects to improve the quality of life in the Fields Corner area.
